Two city teenage boys, Luo Min (Chen Kun) and Ma Jianling (Liu Ye) reach a remote village in Sichuan province for re-education. One day, a young girl from the near village and popularly called as the Little Seamstress (Zhou Xun) arrives there with her grandfather. Soon, Luo, Ma and the girl become friends. As the girl has a thirst for knowledge, Luo and Ma read to her famous books and classics. Now,her favorite is Belzac. Ma and the girl fall in love and she gets impregnated by Ma and she opts for an abortion. On return, the girl is a changed person, with the knowledge gained from Ma and Luo. She decides to leave the village and look for a new life.
